Tourist Attractions

 

              There are many great sites that you should visit in Luxembourg, for it is one of the oldest countries in Europe, which means there are many historical places that are definitely worth visiting!  Five examples of these tourist attractions will be listed below with a description and historical background.

  • The first site is Vianden Castle, which is one of the largest and most beautiful medieval castles in Europe.  It was built in the 900's, with Gothic modifications put on over the next few centuries.

  • The next site is the casemates.  The casemates were part of Luxembourg city's old fortifications.  There is a large underground tunnel system underneath the casemates that covers 14 miles, which you can tour.  

  • Another site is the Grand Ducal Palace.  Built between 1572 and 1574, it is where the Grand Duke of Luxembourg lives.  You can watch the Luxembourg military preform duties on the grounds, From July 15th to September 2nd, you can go in parts of the interior of the palace.  

  • Next is the Market at Place Guillaume, which offers a wide varity of fresh food and crafts to buy.  

  • Lastly is the Notre-Dame Cathedral.  It is the Roman Catholic Cathedral оf Luxembourg City, and it is a great example of Gothic architecture.
